    • Confusion, disorientation, slurred speech, agitation, seizures or loss of consciousness. Any change in mental state is the key sign.

    Why Is Sleep So Badly Affected By Heat?

    This is the complaint I hear most, and there is a genuine physiological reason for it.

    Falling asleep requires your core temperature to drop, and your body achieves that largely by shedding heat through the skin, particularly the hands and feet. A room that is too warm prevents that drop, which is why you can be exhausted and still not fall asleep, and why you wake repeatedly in the small hours.

    Sleep loss then compounds the problem, because fatigue impairs judgement about heat exactly when good judgement matters. Several days of poor sleep in a heatwave is part of why the risk builds as the event goes on rather than peaking on day one.

    What actually helps at night:

    • Cool the bedroom during the day, not at bedtime. Blinds closed on that window from mid morning matters more than anything you do at 10pm.
